Serbian Four Gospels

Serbian Four Gospels from Dublin is the “most mysterious” Serbian book. According to some researchers, it originates from the 6th century, is written in “Serbian” and is proof that there were no migrations of Slavs to the Balkans and that Serbs are an autochthonous population in the Balkans. There is also the opinion of certain experts, from which it follows that the book was written in the middle of the 13th century, somewhere around 1240-1250. In any case, this book represents an invaluable monument of Serbian and South Slavic culture.

What is known for sure is that this monumental book, as its most valuable book, was donated by the Patriarchate of Peć to the National Library of Serbia, when it was founded in 1832. The book was in the National Library in Belgrade until 1914. At the beginning of World War I, due to the danger that Austria would occupy Belgrade , the Serbian Four Gospels, together with the Gospel of Nicholas and the other 50 most valuable Serbian books, were packed in crates and sent by train from Belgrade to Kruševac. During the journey, the books disappeared.

It was not until 1966 that the book was found in Dublin, where it is still located. The mystery and secret surrounding the origin of this book remains to be revealed.
